The Great Green Hype

Since it’s debut trailer shook my soul with it’s captivating visuals and haunting, mythic energy, I have been waiting in deep anticipation for David Lowery’s “ The Green Knight” to hit theatres. And when July 30th finally arrived, I rushed to the earliest showing I could find and happily threw down my hard earned cash for what I’d hoped would be an encapsulating rendition of the old Arthurian legend I knew and loved. And did I get that? If I’m being honest … No. I most certainly did not, but does that mean the movie is bad? Well, let’s unpack that.       At its heart, “The Green Knight,” in its most basic conceit, is a coming-of-age tale centered around a young, spoiled, aspiring knight named Gawain. On Christmas day, when he’s partying it up with his uncle, King Arthur, and his legendary knights of the round table, they are suddenly put upon by the unexpected arrival of the Green Knight, issuing a challenge to any man brave enough to try and la...

Timeless Classics: Chinatown

Most cinephiles are always looking for the next big blockbuster bombshell, the new Oscar gold standard, or a fresh diamond indie darling, but sometimes all anyone really needs is a two hour sit-down with a timeless classic of a bygone era, like Roman Polanski’s Chinatown . With the overwhelming wave of theme-park-IP-flick madness running rampant through theatres across the country, this gripping mystery/thriller is an immense breath of fresh air. Set to the backdrop of the 1920’s LA Water Wars, jaded Private Investigator Jake Gittes, played by prime Jack Nicholson, is approached with the usual case of suspected infidelity and sure enough, it all starts out as nothing more than that. However, in time, he soon finds himself in for more than he bargained for, as his investigation leads him down a rabbit hole of murder, government corruption, and a twisting tale of lies, regret, tragedy, and love that will have you hanging on every word and movement of anyone that looks even the slightes...

MK Annihilates Expectations?

On April 3 rd , in the year of our thunder god, 2021, theatres and televisions across the country were graced with the long awaited brutal, bombastic, and bloody reboot of Mortal Kombat. Since the dubious reception of MK Annihilation, fans have shouted from the rooftops the world over for a proper reimagining of their beloved franchise. And although there has been a slew of attempts via various media over the years, the closest anyone has ever gotten to attaining the perceived cinematic potential of the source material is the highly successful MK 9 game and it’s subsequent sequels. However, I’m happy to say that 2021’s Mortal Kombat is a labor of love that scratches the itch of it’s diehard fans ... mostly. As a fan, I can safely say that there are a litany of reasons to love this fast paced brawl-fest of a movie. Between top notch costumes, a colorful cast of characters, a bitching remix of the 90’s MK theme song, and an eye-catching clash of bloody martial arts mayhem, accented beaut...

Humble Beginnings

Hello everyone,    My name is Levi Mock, your Low Budget Movie Buff, and l ike so many others before me, I dare to brave the perilous road of opinion and plunge myself deep into the darkest chasm of this or any other parallel dimension, the internet. Now as we all now, the internet is wild, unpredictable bastion of thoughts, feelings, and ideas that at their best, can inspire and dazzle any hungry soul or at their worst, reek havoc and unearth a dark and vengeful wrath that lays deep within it's bowels. It is with my greatest hope that, through my modest blog regarding the review and analyzation of cinema and the entertainment industry, that I can do more of the former and less of the latter. However, in the end, that is for you, the humble reader to decide. So, please join me as I seek to take you on hopefully a fun and introspective ride through bombastic blockbusters, box office bombs, cinema classics, and the world from whence they came. Now take your seat for the show is ...
